So tomorrow will be the first “work day” for our new president. I wish him luck. I hope that he will recognize that he needs to work everyday breaking down barriers that divide this country. I hope he is ready for the mess that he helped to create. He has done so much to cultivate a culture of suspicion. I think I’ll put together a lists of things that he can do to be a better president.
I know, I know…he hasn’t listened to anyone else…why would he listen to me? We all have to do our part.
Eight years ago when the inauguration of President Obama took place, they had it playing in the auditorium. They encouraged students to come down and watch history in the making. We believed that every student needed to be made aware that America can hire and then rehire a black man to be our president.
Flash forward…tomorrow Donald J. Trump will become the “leader of the free world”. His election is a landmark in the modern day as he has never held elected public office. He is successful in business and an international celebrity. He speaks with confidence and no matter how inappropriate his behavior, he seems to connect with people.
There are no arrangements being made to witness his Inauguration tomorrow. In fact, public officials are boycotting this event. They are being quite public about their displeasure. In our school, our new president is so polarizing an individual that we are trying to protect our students from being exposed to his behavior. There is no mention of watching the Inaugural event as it happens in our school, and unless it takes place in the history classes, we will not see it.
The one thing that I can take from this is that our outgoing leader has made plans to relocate to the California desert, just a couple of miles from where my profile blog photo is located. I will be moving there in just over 100 days. Maybe I can have a chance encounter to meet with him (and his secret service entourage) to just say thanks, or pick his brain, or maybe get some advice on my next career move…like…maybe President of the United States. Who knows??? It could happen!! After all, we just voted for someone that nobody likes, nobody believes in, with no experience and he is so obviously in it for himself.
I will hold off on announcing right away. Maybe I’ll make it public with a Tweet later on!
Weigh in day is the beginning of the journey. Now their must be a goal or a destination. Without a goal or destination…any road will get you there.
224 lbs That might explain why all my clothes have shrunk…or so it seems. I know that it is discipline. I know that it is my compass. I need to know where I am going. So today, we begin. It usually takes a contest. Well, now I am in.
Last night, I drove my son to the airport. He is leaving for a 5 month gig on the Azamara Journey. As I said goodbye, I told him that the next time he sees me, I will be retired. Wow!!
There’s a lot that I want to accomplish before I see him again. It is time to get started. The days are moving fast. Time is something you can never get back. I won’t waste one more minute on wrong thinking. I will take care of the clock. I will respect my compass.
If a person can create something of value, they should be able to market and sell it using available technologies. This should be taught and there is no better way to test it than through an old fart like me.
I remain employed by my current NJ public school and it never ceases to amaze me. When I had this blog hosted at WordPress.com, it was not accessible at school. Now that I have it hosted with SiteGround, I can post whatever I want.
The free version has limitations built into it. The free version is talked about at our conferences. The free version is a way for anyone to begin to build their writing skills by writing everyday. The free version is blocked.
One of the glaring problems with education today is its lack of connection to the real world. We are still talking about jobs and creating jobs and looking to recover manufacturing jobs instead of teaching students how to create value for themselves. Students create things all the time. Those creations are never seen to be valuable enough to be the vocation that will get them through life.
I have a rebellious streak in me. I have been using one essential question in my music production class. It is “How can I get the world to pay my bills?” This should be the question that everyone answers and not “what do I need to get into college?” That is a loaded question that presupposes that you should go to college. The cost today outweighs the benefit particularly because colleges never ask my essential question either.
I am participating in an action research project. If a person can create something of value, they should be able to market and sell it using available technologies. This should be taught and there is no better way to test it than through an old fart like me. Also, no one should have their own value determined by those around them. There are a lot more people in this world.
I may have wanted to click my heels together several times yesterday and utter the words, “there’s no place like home, but I knew that it would have been an exercise in frustration. I was already frustrated enough. I have gotten used to the way that the airlines have used their real time information and their connected devices to make sure that you are fully aware of what is going on with your transportation situation.
They were nice enough to tell me that although there was no problem with my initial flight, the connecting flight was already delayed. Then the initial flight was delayed. Then when I arrived at Las Vegas’ Macarron Airport, the 3:15 flight was listed as departing at 6:10. It eventually departed at 5:35, but not before changing to 4:15, then 4:35, then 4:55, then 5:05, then 5:10 and finally…uh…GATE CHANGE…run to the other side of the terminal and then board the plane.
It really makes you appreciate being home…no matter how cold it is.
