The NAMM Show

The NAMM Show is the annual conference for the National Association of Music Merchants. It is, by far, the largest music event that I have ever attended. It brings together performing artists, buyers, sellers, manufacturers, music agents, and music education advocacy groups all under one conference.

Mike and Karen McCausland at the NAMM Show.

It was held at the Anaheim Convention Center and attracted thousands of people. It was just a stones throw from Disneyland. I stayed for 3 days and I still haven’t been to all of the vendors. I have also been to many workshops, most involving education where I still have a passion.

One of the great things that I was able to do was to meet new and aspiring artists in the field of music. I spoke at length with a couple at a round table discussion for the industry. We met an AR guy who gave many insights to those there. I was pleased to meet a delightful young lady from Oklahoma named Ciara Brooke. She was typical of the countless number of people following their dreams.

I will certainly go again to this amazing event. It was well worth the trip.

Dare to follow your dream…

I have found that it is in the familiar surroundings that I am far more distracted. Distraction is a major problem in everybody’s life.

Last night, I had a visit from a former student.  She chose to leave the east coast, alone in her car, to follow her dream.  Packed inside and onto the back of her car were all of her worldly belongings, or all that she perceived that she needs to make it here in California.

She is blessed with a beautiful voice and a delightful personality.  After graduating from high school, she found herself in a number of service jobs, mostly as a waitress and a bartender.  She never really focused on her own talent.  Now, she is throwing caution to the wind and trying to find out just who she is and what is the purpose for her life here on Earth.

Leaving everything that you know is hard.  Family and friends who have put down roots probably will never understand the yearning that one has to really make a unique contribution to the world.  Today, it is not necessarily a place but a frame of mind.  Still, a change of scenery couldn’t hurt.

I have found that it is in the familiar surroundings that I am far more distracted.  Distraction is a major problem in everybody’s life.  Sometimes you can make distractions a convenient excuse for not doing the work that you should have already done on the front end…and that is clarifying your goals.  I was about to put on my teacher hat and preach this message to my former student.  Instead, maybe I should take my own advice.

Hence forth, my goals will be articulated. My distractions will have solutions related to triggers. I will trigger myself to do something much more productive and in line with my goals. This will allow me to lead a much more congruent life.

A Change in Direction

As of today, my website has a new name but kind of a similar purpose.  Our existence on this planet should never be looked at as one of toil or drudgery.  It should never get to a point where you have to despair for each and every coming day.

As a teacher in the public schools I had to concern myself with the subject or the curriculum.  I never had the opportunity to consider the person.  Well, I did…but when I deviated I usually got myself in trouble.  Mostly I had problems with people who had been there in the school system forever.

Today is very different.  We are going to have to find ways of creating value for ourselves.  Our lives as employees will never completely fulfill us nor will they be adequate to the task of paying the bills, particularly if you went to college with the promise that the degree would be the credential that you would need to give you the job that would be your dream.

This site will hence forth be dedicated to the dreams.  Dreams become reality for those who take action.  I know there will be resistance, but, if you take the easy way, if you don’t challenge yourself or the social norms as presented to you by your parents, teachers, and yes even your friends…you will never be happy.  You can’t fly with the wind at your back.  It’s time to turn into the wind, pull back on the yoke and full speed ahead.
